Nokia's .3gp Files

I noticed that Nokia's .3gp files are simpy ffh263 encoded

Therefore, it's easy to get MPlayer playing those videos. Follow me...

First of all, download MPlayer and install it. (Note that mplayer should have support for ffmpeg, so ffmpeg development libraries have to be installed). If you try to watch a video from your Nokia with mplayer right now, it will most likely fail with an error message like this one:

Cannot find codec matching selected -vo and video format 0x33363273.

This is easily fixed though:

1. Copy the codecs.conf file from the etc/ directory in your mplayer sources to ~/.mplayer/
2. Add the following line under the videocodec ffh263 (just search for it) section in this file:

format 0x33363273

Watching videos should work now. Also converting is possible

This command converts the .3gp to a DivX4:
# mencoder -ovc divx4 -nosound "Video.3gp" -o Video.avi

I'm still profiling a bit. I will update this entry, as soon as I found an appropriate bitrate and got sound conversion working.

It's been absolutely ages since I have posted! I've been soooo busy at the moment what with work, and seeing people and things that I haven't really had time to post anything.I've got some cracking things to post about, which I will hopefully do with in the next couple of days, so hold tight, there's something coming!For the time being.... I have a Nokia 6600 smartphone. I took some decent video using it for the first time yesterday, and now I'm a bit dismayed that I can't look at the files on a desktop computer without installing Nokia's multimedia software. I've had a trawl around t'web and found this page: http://blog.chris.de/archives/22_Nokias_3gp_Files.html and if you read closely, there is a link through to this site: http://www.mitsoftware.com/akiles/ where there is an 3gp to AVI convertor.I'll let you know how i get on!

I tried using MPlayer, with appropraitely modifying codec.conf as mentioned above, but I continue to get error which is as follows

Playing abc.3gp
MOV: FIle-Type unknown Major-Brand: 3gp4
MOV: missing header (moov/cmov) chunk! Maybe broken file ....
Falling back on trying to parse playlist abc.3gp...
Sorry this file format is not recognized/supported

everyone in the office is annoyin me coz em the only one using nokia 3650.
everybody has their spv phones and its windows powered. they've been converting mpegs to wmv and sendin it to their units. dont know how can i also convert the freakin shit video to be able to play it to my fuckin phone.

what do i need to do to upload videos onto my nec808N mobile phone. It says i need mp4 or 3gp format. When i convert mpegs to mp4 format it uploads but doesnt run in the phone... do i need to change resolution to match the phone?? are there different types of mp4?

Quicktime just came out with a codec for their player. It will now open .3GP files. If you have pro you can export them as other formats (.mov, .avi, mpg etc) you can also import other movies and make them .3GP so you can put it on your phone to watch later.

I have had the complete Lord of the Rings Movie on my phone. It was compress from 750 meg AVI file to 56 meg .3GP file.

I have the what you called quicktime pro version. But as I convert mpeg to 3gp format there's no audio w/ the result.
And even b4 the conversion, upon checking the setting, quicktime couldn,t detect any audio codec w/ the mpeg that I tried to convert..I also tried to use the Nokia Multimedia Converter 2.0 version to convert mpeg to 3gp, but still I came out w/ the same problem. there is still no audio w/ the result...
I hope you or someone out there can help me w/ this problem...

to convert 3gp videos ******** use quicktime 6 pro update and install 3gp patch
step 1, export mpeg,avi,movie to quicktime movie format and save
step 2 use quicktime 6 pro to open file
and export to 3gp that way u get realy sound and vid,
i have 10 music videos on 32mb sd card
for mobile phone its great

go to nokia developer forum (do a google search for it) and then download Nokia Media Convertor 2.0, that allows AVI, MPEG to be converted to .3gp file format.

I have read all these posts and still cant find anything to convert avi, mpg, etc to 3gp except quicktime pro which i have not tried because you have to pay for and i've seen posts saying that the sound still does not work with this. Is there any free way to convert these files.

Hi,
When you attach your Mobile 3650 phone to computer with pc suite an try to upload files to your phone it wil automaticly convert the video files to 3gp that can be readable with your phone. Just try it.
But I will be so glad to know if any other Program can convert it without uploading... Hope to hear from you soon. Your sincerly

Seems like everyone else on this page wants to convert .3gp files off the nokia phones to something sensible like mpegs. Found this page very annoying as lots of requests but no answers!!!!

Anyhoo, I`ve managed to do this in two steps :

1) You need to get hold of a (FREE) prog called 3GPTORAWAVI. Do a google search for it. As the title suggests it converts these .3gp files to raw avi`s - VERY BIG (5/6 Meg) and not very emailable!!! So;

2) Use a (FREE) program called AVI-VCD (Get from download.com) to convert these to mpegs. Superb prog. My 5/6 meg files came out at 400k! Very emailable!!! This program is only free to try, but the limitation is that it can only handle files of less than 1 minute, but seeing as my phone only takes 10 second clips this don`t matter!

1) You need to get hold of a (FREE) prog called 3GPTORAWAVI. Do a google search for it. As the title suggests it converts these .3gp files to raw avi`s - VERY BIG (5/6 Meg) and not very emailable!!! So;

2) Use a (FREE) program called AVI-VCD (Get from download.com) to convert these to mpegs. Superb prog. My 5/6 meg files came out at 400k! Very emailable!!! This program is only free to try, but the limitation is that it can only handle files of less than 1 minute, but seeing as my phone only takes 10 second clips this don`t matter!

Playing 3gp files in your computer from your nokia phones? QuickTime6.5 did it! Reading some of your comments and tips I came across one guy recommended to use QuickTime player. It so happen that I just downloaded that player through the net. So I used the program and it worked without any hazzle just like playing a normal vcd movie.

Hi all. This maybe a minor problem for u guys but still, i need help! I Am Using Philips Camcorder & when i transfer the video file to my PC via IR, it does not play video. I Checked MY Handset (3650) The Normal Videos Had H.263 video codec but the videos from philips camcorder had MPEG 4 codec. The files play very well on my handset but when transfered to PC, there is only audio! thanks for ur help in advance

Seeing as it was here that I found the info I thought it only fair to pass on what I've found so far.

To convert video files from your PC to .3gp files that will play on a Nokia phone (mine's a 6230) here's what you need...

The Nokia Media Converter as posted previously on this page does everything you need - & it's free.

You'll need to register on Nokia's Developer Forums to get this but it only takes a couple of minutes.

Once you've downloaded this (17Mb) & installed it the running of the program is dead straightforward.

Just a case of browsing to the file you want & clicking Convert.

The only limitation that I've come across thus far is that it only seems to convert from MPEG files, so not AVI's or DIVX's... However I've found another program that supposedly will convert AVI's to MPEG (WinMPG_VideoConvert.zip)... I'm in the process of downloading this so I will post again later to let you know how succesful I am with this...

Thanks to everyone that posted on here, ESPECIALLY the links to Nokia's Converter - that's made my life so much easier.!!

Just try the Nokia PC suit of nokia 6600 and from there install the nokia multimedia player and after installling open your mpeg file using it, then from the file menu save as the file. it will now convert the mpeg file to 3gp format that can be played into your phone..Try to explore to the PC suit for your 7610 maybe it has it also.

The best software I've found for converting to 3gp is the xilisoft one. Unlike quicktime etc., this can do DIVX etc to 3GP.

Emule may be worth a look ;o)

I have TWO problems
1. nokia multimedia converter pro v2.0 could convert only mpeg and avi files to 3 gp format.
BUT NOT THE WMV FORMAT FILES
HOW DO I CONVERT WMV TO 3GP?
2.these 3gp files can be played by real player only. But smart movies/dvd players couldn't play this format. They need compressed avi files. Which software shoud i use to convert dat files(e g.film song clips)to compressed avi files which can be played by SMART MOVIES OR DVD PLAYERS IN MY NOKIA 6600
