Half-Life 2 source found on the net!Comments

You cannot "open source" products like these. The engines behind these games are the capital of every company in this industry and leaking their code to rivals on the market would be like committing suicide. This was either a case of industrial espionage where an opponent wanted to hurt Valve badly or an incredibly dumb hacker.
Moreover, you wouldn't get any benefit from opening the engine's source code, because the code is so complicated that only few programmers would understand it enough to create worthwhile contributions. Opening the source for plugins, add-ons, any API that would allow you to create enhancements for the game or tweak it: that works.
i see it a bit differently. of course the engine is the capital of the company. but since rivals have access to this knowledge now, anyways (and they are looking at the source, trust me *g*), it won't really matter for valve to offer this piece of software as opensource.
it's just a matter of the right licence. it won't be allowed for rivals to develop and sell games with this engine! they would have to release it as opensource then, too. of course, opensource projects could fork like hell, but i think that's not any harm for valve, since it's quite difficult as you described. so, my resume: api and plugin development will speed up, the game gets more and more popular, valve has still the rights to sell this game. the only loser: ati. they paid money for getting exclusive access to the source and had the chance to optimise their drivers. nvidia will take this chance now, for free. everything just imho... muesli
Yes, they have the knowledge now that the source is in the wild. However, nobody will release such a source on their own, regardless of the license. One thing is theory, the other is efficient implementation. If a market rival just copies ideas from your code, how could you prove it?
